One of opera's most popular comedies, L'Elisir D'Amore (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti (in ITALIAN), set in a small village in the Basque Country at end of the 18th century, tells the story of a magic love potion and the destiny of a love triangle involving a lovable bumpkin, a dashing sergeant and the bewitching town flirt. Filled with lighthearted charm and bursting with feel-good laughs, The Elixir of Love features effervescent Italian melodies and plenty of bel canto vocal fireworks.
The story is simple, but very witty and funny. Young Italian country boy Nemorino simply cannot summon enough savoir-faire to please well-to-do young farm owner Adina. She is very much in love with him but annoyed by his lack of self-assurance and uses Belcore, a sergeant stationed in the village, to try to provoke him into action. Everything is further complicated by the appearance of a “doctor,” who sees in the romantic entanglement an additional chance to make some fast money in the village. After his arrival, an amazing number of situations reverse themselves. Is it really the result of the potion purveyor’s “elixir of love”?
