The Intersection of Arts and Athletics: Ernie Barnes x MCC
Published by A. Fox
Superbowl 2020 and the start of Black History Month was a welcomed weekend of fun and frenzy in the City of Miramar. While both the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers blistered with excitement about playing in South Beach, Miamians know that they were no wear near those sandy shores. Miramar is the nearest City to Miami Gardens – the true home of the Hard Rock Stadium and where the big game would be played. To capitalize on the presence of a captive audience – those who would grow tired of $45 Lyft rides, long lines, and overpriced entry, The City of Miramar presented of a meaningful exhibition at the Miramar Cultural Center.
In honor and recognition of Football Elite turned Artist, Ernie Barnes, MCC acquired an Exclusive Collection of Ernie Barnes Original Artwork. It was devised as a relevant way to engage our hotel partners and their guests in activity within the City of Miramar during the 2020 Superbowl experience. The City of Miramar via the Department of Cultural Affairs obtained the rights to have the exhibit through the Estate of Ernie Barnes. Ernie Barnes storied career in the NFL and his historical significance to black culture made it a perfect intersection of Arts and Athletics, as well as Black History. Well known for having found acclaim for his work via the sitcom” Good Times,” through its main character JJ and his recognitions in the Sports world; Ernie Barnes pieces also reflected the injustices of the 1960 as African Americas fought for Civil Rights. His contributions were celebrated with a star-studded Opening Reception on January 31st. The event included an open bar, dinner buffet, complimentary cocktails and a live painting of Ernie Barnes. We encourage everyone to experience the FREE a curated collection of his work and legacy on display in the Ansin Family Gallery through February 29, 2020.
